Revision Shoulder Surgery

What is Revision Shoulder Surgery?

Revision shoulder surgery is also known as revision total shoulder arthroplasty. It’s a procedure that orthopedic surgeons perform to replace previously implanted artificial shoulder joints or prosthetics that have become loose, cause pain, or are no longer functioning properly.

Following an evaluation and consultation, the shoulder surgeon will replace the current prosthesis with a new prosthesis, either in a similar manner to the original surgery or customized to the patient’s unique needs. In some cases, the surgeon may also use a bone graft—either from another area of the body or from a donor—to help rebuild bone and provide additional support for the new implant.

Revision shoulder surgery, like primary total shoulder replacement surgery, requires ample time for healing along with structured physical therapy in order to achieve the best results. With recovery, most patients experience less discomfort and improved function of the shoulder once fully healed.
