Iliotibial Band Syndrome (IT Band or ITBS)

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

What is IT Band Syndrome?

Iliotibial band syndrome (or ITBS) is the painful inflammation of the iliotibial band, a thick, tendon-like portion of a muscle that travels from the hip down the outer side of the thigh to the knee. ITBS results in pain which is aggravated by activity and usually felt on the outside of the knee. Many times, patients will think they have a knee condition without realizing a tight IT band may be the cause.

Treatment

Stretching and physical therapy are the standard treatment for ITBS. Cortisone injections may be necessary if the pain is severe and surgery is used in rare instances.
