Local patient back in the saddle thanks to anterior hip replacements

October 23, 2013

SPOKANE, Wash. (Oct. 23, 2013) – Severe arthritis in both hips left avid horseback rider and Colfax resident Marilyn Bafus with limited mobility, forcing her to stop riding and competing in the roping clinics she has participated in for several years.

“It got to the point where I couldn’t even walk without pain, let alone attempt to ride,” Bafus says.

That’s when she decided to undergo bilateral total hip arthroplasties in both hips with Dr. Jonathan P. Keeve at Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists. The hip replacement procedure uses an anterior approach, which is a minimally invasive alternative approach to traditional total hip replacement, proven to reduce movement restrictions and provide patients with quicker recoveries, shorter hospital stays and less pain than a traditional hip replacement because its minimally invasive techniques do not disrupt a patient’s surrounding muscles and soft tissues.

“This was the clear surgical choice for Marilyn, because it allows for a quicker and less painful recovery,” Dr. Keeve says. “As an active woman, it was important for her to return to riding and her other activities as quickly as possible.”

Though her arthritis had left her with no flexibility in her hips, limited rotation and lack of movement, Bafus was able to return to her previous activity level less than a year after her final surgery.

“I could walk right away after surgery,” Bafus says. “It was an amazing feeling.”

She has since hopped back in the saddle and returned to roping clinic competitions, even recently bringing home a third place medal.
